 South Central, a drama based on the leader of a gang and his son who begins to follow his footsteps.

What titles are displayed during the opening sequence? The titles are the first thing you see in the opening sequence. The titles appear to be members of the cast and crew. 

 What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? In the opening scene, you first see a blank black screen that reads names. After the blank scene goes away, you then see a man standing outside of a jailhouse while an officer uncuffs him in order to be released. He then gets into a car with someone he knows and as they arrive to their destination, they meet up with their gang.

What connotations do these images carry?

There are no connotations surrounding the blank screen. The connotations surrounding the man standing outside of the jail house suggests that the movie will be have something to do with crime. The connotations surrounding the image of the man getting into the car with someone he knows suggest that they are friends. The connotation surrounding the image of the gang suggests that gangs will play a part in the movie.

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

The film establishes a a feeling of the genre from the outset because from the very beginning you see conflict between two people. You also hear comedy as well as see something regarding romanticism. Conflict, comedy, and romanticism are all characteristics of the drama genre. 

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience? 


The strategies used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience are casting, the appeal to emotions, and the use of a certain title. With this film, majority of the cast is black which will be more appealing to black people. This film evokes many emotions revolving around a black father and son which is very common in the real world. The title of the film is a real place which will appeal to the people who happen to stay in that place and/or know of it. 

How has technology been used effectively?

Technology has been used effectively due to it creating a film that has a powerful meaning. The use of transitions and camera angles help better tell the story. Without technology, the use of low lighting and fast transitions would not be able to help tell the story that is trying to be told.
